Why golfers look for a handicap without a club

Society days, pay-and-play rounds, and Saturday fourballs all feel fairer with a handicap — but club membership isn't always wanted or affordable. Some golfers need "a number for mates" to level the field; others need "a number for comps" that's recognised by official bodies. The tool you choose depends on which job you're hiring it for.

What "official" actually means in England

An official Handicap Index® under the World Handicap System comes via an authorised body — in England, that's an affiliated golf club or iGolf (managed in the MyEG app). The current price for iGolf is £47 per year. This official index is needed for many competitions and championships; free social indexes like Golf Daddy's are not recognised for those events.

Path A: Official Handicap Index® via iGolf / MyEG

Who it's for: Non-club members in England who need a recognised index for competitions, ballot entries, or courses that require official verification.

How it works: Subscribe via England Golf, activate your account in the MyEG app, submit 54 acceptable holes (any mix of 9- and 18-hole rounds with pre-registered intent), and receive your official Handicap Index®. Full details on attestation rules and acceptable rounds are on England Golf's iGolf page.

Pros:

  • Official WHS recognition for competitions
  • Portable across clubs and courses
  • Public liability insurance included

Cons:

  • £47 annual fee
  • Pre-registration and attestation rules
  • Not built for live fourball banter and shared scoring

Path B: Free social Handicap Index in Golf Daddy

Golf Daddy calculates a social Handicap Index from your scored rounds using the same method shape as WHS — best 8 of your last 20. It's built from rounds you already play: fourball, society, or casual. Free forever for UK scoring, GPS on 2,500+ courses, and handicap tracking. Live shared leaderboards let you score the whole group, including guests who don't have the app.

Important: This is not an official England Golf WHS Handicap Index®. It's for social and society play where official recognition isn't required.

Common questions

Is Golf Daddy's handicap official WHS?

No. Golf Daddy calculates a social Handicap Index using the WHS method (best 8 of last 20 rounds) for use with friends and society golf. It is not an official England Golf WHS Handicap Index®. For an official recognised index, you need club membership or iGolf.

Can I use Golf Daddy's handicap for club competitions?

No. Club competitions require an official Handicap Index® issued by an affiliated club or via iGolf. Golf Daddy's social index is for casual rounds, society days, and playing with mates where official recognition isn't required.

Is iGolf the only official non-club route in England?

Yes. iGolf is England Golf's official scheme for golfers who want a recognised WHS Handicap Index® without joining a club. It's managed through the MyEG app and costs £47 per year.

Does scoring with mates count toward Golf Daddy's index?

Yes. Every round you score in Golf Daddy (solo or fourball, including rounds with guests) contributes to your social handicap calculation. Your index updates automatically from your best 8 of last 20 rounds.

Do I need Apple Watch for Golf Daddy?

No. Golf Daddy works on iPhone and Android phones. Apple Watch support and Live Activities are available on iPhone as a bonus, but the full scoring and handicap features work on your phone.

Can I use both Golf Daddy and iGolf?

Absolutely. Many golfers use Golf Daddy for live fourball scoring and social handicap tracking, and maintain an iGolf subscription for when they need the official index for competitions. They serve different jobs.
